NYC Volunteering

By Miriam Silberstein

As a pre-med, something I discovered early on was that there’s a tendency for students to follow a cookie-cutter path to medical school. Research? Check. Clinical experience? Check. Shadowing doctors? Double check. While all of those things are undeniably important, college is also an amazing time to explore your passions and have some fun. Trust me, doing things you love can not only make you stand out as an applicant, but also keep you motivated and grounded. It can also help you take needed breaks and improve your mental health!

Growing up, I always had a love for horses. So, when I found out I could combine that love with volunteering, I jumped at the chance. That’s when I discovered Gallop NYC, an incredible organization based in Brooklyn that offers therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities. Gallop NYC has been a game-changer for me—offering a break from my studies while still giving me meaningful, hands-on experience helping others. Plus, the impact therapeutic riding can have on people with disabilities is genuinely inspiring. You witness first-hand how confidence grows, how motor skills improve, and how the bond between humans and animals can create a truly healing space.

But Gallop NYC isn’t the only volunteer opportunity in Brooklyn. Here are some other ways to make a meaningful impact while staying true to yourself and your interests:

1. Education Equity Foundation with NPREMA

If you love mentoring, the Education Equity Foundation offers a perfect platform. As a volunteer tutor, you’ll work with high school students from underserved communities, helping them strengthen their academic skills.

2. GrowNYC

For those passionate about the environment, GrowNYC offers volunteer opportunities that support sustainable living. From managing local farmers' markets to teaching people how to compost, this organization is perfect if you're eco-minded and want to help build a greener Brooklyn.

3. New York Cares

If you like variety, New York Cares partners with various nonprofits throughout the city. From organizing park cleanups to helping out at soup kitchens, you can explore a wide range of volunteer activities. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn about different communities, and give back in ways that might surprise you.

4. Brooklyn Public Library

Book lovers like me might find their place at the Brooklyn Public Library. Whether it’s helping with literacy programs, assisting with events, or organizing community workshops, this opportunity allows you to get involved in promoting education and culture. It's also a good fit if you're into tutoring or love the calm of a library environment!

5. Sunset Park Community Health Center

For those looking for clinical experience in a more hands-on setting, volunteering at the Sunset Park Community Health Center is a fantastic option. You'll work with underserved populations, help out in a medical setting, and get a real taste of what it’s like to serve in healthcare, all while making a tangible difference in the community.
